How May We Unleaven What Is Puffed Up?

unleaven_whats_puffed_upHow do get puffed up? Several things may cause us to be inflated and not know it, as elder Raul de Asis-Hipe illustrated during the Days of Unleavened Bread: “Madami akong kilala na nasa posisyon...” “We are educated...” We make ourselves ‘somebody,’ “I deserve some respect’ ‘Magaling ako... I am the best in my field’ ‘Ay matagal na ako sa church’ ‘Yung family ko nasa church...’

"3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded..."John 13:3-5 (NKJV)

The Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated what His disciples must do to one another on a daily basis, washing the feet of another. Imagine the joy if only those in the body of Christ would apply the meaning, and not just partake of the emblems!

Twenty-five years after Christ gave those instructions, a fledgling church thrived in Corinth. On the outside, it was a pioneering church, founded by influential figures in the new testament church, functioning with real servants of God, but on the inside was headed for trouble, with people thinking highly of themselves over others, lording it over . What were they and what can we learn from this church and Paul’s rebuke?

6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. 7 For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
8 You are already full! You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us—and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you! 9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now...
1 Corinthians 4:6-13 (NKJV)

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”Philippians 2:5-11 (NKJV)
