What Does It Mean To Deny Ourselves and Take Up Our Cross?

deny_ourselves04One of the distinct scenes during the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ, as Gilbert Deboma related during the Days of Unleavened Bread, was that of a bystander asked to carry the added weight Jesus Christ was carrying (about 300 lbs)...

32 Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.” Matthew 27:32

"21 Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.”Mark 15:21

Commentaries enlarge on the detail, finding that Simon came from as far as Libya, 50 days walk from Jerusalem, being asked to do something which “at first he might be unwilling to do, either because it was scandalous or because, being a follower of the Christ he did not want to be an instrument in His execution...”

"19 Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but the Jews only. 20 But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.” Acts 11:19-21

34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Mark 8:34

Far from the penitensya reenactments improvised in Philippine culture, what does it really mean in this present world for followers of GOD to DENY ourselves and TAKE UP our cross?
