Courage In The Midst of Worry and Fear

fears_worries“Who would you rather be, a child afraid of the dark, or a man who fears the light?” asked elder Raul de Asis-Hipe during the Sabbath of July 16, 2011. “Even where we live, my family has seen in the span of ten years how a once open and quiet village is now with streets installed with gates on both ends, and at nearly every intersection. A simple peaceful community turned into a fearful, apprehensive, security-conscious neighborhood... Drugs and alcohol-induced behavior, stress in school and workplace, financial uncertainty breed fears and anxieties run ahead of us, seizing our imagination... so that our children, brought up in homes blessed by God with nurturing love, begin to withdraw from the confusion that surrounds us.

“Yet God our Father has nothing to do with those fears! The fearful man is at the farthest opposite from the fear of God. Having the fear of God imbues us with confidence, boldness, courage. Being fearful though, fills us with alarm, panic, trepidation... and is at the root of appalling criminal acts, desperate measures, irrational cravings for more material things.

“Where does this fear come from? Who started it? When did man suddenly ‘become afraid?’

“How did valiant men and women of God have that kind of courage even in the face of death? Can we have that kind of boldness in a world that seems too much?”

1 Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up;
Fighting all day he oppresses me.
2 My enemies would hound me all day,
For there are many who fight against me, O Most High.

3 Whenever I am afraid,

I will trust in You.
4 In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?
Psalm 56:1-4

5 I called on the LORD in distress;
The LORD answered me and set me in a broad place.
6 The LORD is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
Psalm 118:5

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me...
Psalm 23:4
